Hello Range Lake:
I attended the house warming party for the new Day Shelter in Yellowknife. This is located on the other side of the old Pan Asia parking lot, downtown. It's a place where homeless residents in YK could drop by from 7 am to 7pm 7 days a week.
Until this premise opened, the homeless residents of YK did not really have a place to be between 7 am to 7pm when they can return to their overnight shelters. This will be especially important with cold weather upon us. The premise is equipped with a toilet facility, a shower and comfortable furniture where they can watch TV and have a bite to eat. There will also be counseling services.
It's been set up as a three year pilot project. GNWT is providing $450k over three years, BHP is providing $150K and City of Yellowknife $50k.
Most importantly, it's a place where I believe the people of good will gather to provide food, clothing and other necessary goods to those most in need. It is a very welcoming place for the clients it serves. It's a good thing.
