Sandy Lee is the MLA for Range Lake, Minister of Health and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Status of Women, Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities, Minister Responsible for Homeless, and Minister Responsible for Seniors.
Ms. Lee was elected to the 14th Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories as the Member for Range Lake on December 6th, 1999, the 15th Legislative Assembly on November 24, 2003, and the 16th Legislative Assembly on October 1, 2007 . Ms. Lee is one of three women elected.
A long-time Northerner, Ms. Lee has made Yellowknife her home since 1978. She is a proud product of the local education system, having graduated from William McDonald Junior High School and Sir John Franklin High School in Yellowknife, where she was awarded the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and the Mace Coffey Service Award for her service and leadership within the student community.
Ms. Lee went on to further her education, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with High Honours from Carleton University in Ottawa and a law degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax. She also studied two years of Business Administration Program, majoring in Consumer Marketing from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary.
Prior to commencing her career as a lawyer in Yellowknife, Ms. Lee worked for the Government of the Northwest Territories in various capacities. She also served as a research officer for the Members of the Legislative Assembly and as an Executive Assistant to Cabinet Ministers and the Speaker of the House.
Ms. Lee has been active as a volunteer for a number of community organizations including the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the NWT Council for Disable Persons. She also served as President of the Multicultural Association of the Northwest Territories.
In 2000, Ms. Lee was asked to speak at the Closing Plenary of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland. She was also the only elected representative from Canada to serve as a member of the 2003 Nigerian Presidential Elections Commonwealth Election Observer Team.
